Media Literacy for Parents

Choosing high-quality apps for early learners

Not all apps are created equal. With thousands of “educational” apps on the market, parents need a simple framework for selecting those that truly support learning and development.

Open‑ended play and gentle pacing

Look for apps that encourage creativity, exploration and problem solving rather than rote repetition or fast‑paced entertainment. Good apps allow children to make choices, experiment and respond at their own pace. There should be clear instructions, meaningful feedback and no sudden distractions. Avoid apps that rely heavily on in‑app purchases or advertisements; they interrupt the learning flow and may collect personal data.

Privacy checks and no autoplay

Read the app’s privacy policy to ensure it does not collect unnecessary personal information or track your child’s location. Apps targeted at children should comply with privacy laws such as COPPA in the United States. Turn off autoplay and opt out of data sharing when possible. Choose apps that are ad‑free or provide a paid version without ads. Limit the number of apps on your child’s device so they can focus on a few meaningful experiences rather than hopping between many shallow ones.

Quality apps versus fast entertainment

High‑quality apps are designed with input from educators and child‑development experts. They may involve drawing, building, storytelling, coding or music making. Apps that encourage passivity—endless scrolling, watching short clips or tapping randomly for points—do not support learning and can lead to overstimulation. Before downloading, read reviews from trusted organisations such as Common Sense Media and test the app yourself. Sit with your child during use and talk about what they are doing; co‑use turns screen time into a shared experience and enhances learning.
