Nearby nature: outdoor play—even in small spaces

Fresh air, sunlight and natural materials support children’s physical health, sensory development and sense of wonder. Outdoor play doesn’t require a large yard; balconies, courtyards and local parks can all become adventure zones.

Inviting nature into small spaces

Create a container garden with herbs, flowers or hardy vegetables. Children can dig, plant seeds, water and watch sprouts grow. Fill a tray with sand, pebbles, sticks and leaves for sensory exploration. Collect natural treasures—pinecones, shells, feathers—during walks and set up a nature table at home. Provide magnifying glasses for close observation of insects, bark and petals. These experiences build language and science skills while fostering respect for living things

Balancing safety and exploration

Teach children how to handle nature respectfully: avoid pulling leaves off living plants, stay on paths and wash hands after digging. Use sunscreen, hats and appropriate clothing for the weather. Encourage them to take small risks like balancing on a log or climbing a low boulder within your comfort zone. Discuss what to do if they see wildlife, such as observing from a distance. Small, daily doses of outdoor play reduce stress, support healthy sleep and contribute to overall well‑being.

Outdoor movement versus indoor movement

Playing outside invites larger motor activity: running, jumping, climbing, throwing and catching. Rougher ground and uneven surfaces challenge balance and coordination in ways indoor flooring cannot. Natural light helps regulate circadian rhythms and boosts vitamin D production. While indoor movement breaks are valuable, aim for at least 180 minutes of varied physical activity each day for toddlers and preschoolers, including energetic play outdoors whenever possible[5].
